Dow GLBI and JANCM announce “Fore Our Future” contest winners

Where: Midland Country Club, MI

What: The Junior Achievement of North Central Michigan (JANCM) and the 2019 Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational (DOW GLBI) today announced the winners of the “Fore Our Future Presented by Ally” competition, which offered students the opportunity to compete for a chance to operate a beverage concession at the upcoming Dow GLBI from July 17-20 at Midland Country Club.

Kennedi Lachik, Brett Podgorniak and Derek Riley from the Standish Sterling Central School competed against students from seven other Great Lakes Bay Region schools to claim the title for their product, the “Marilyn Smith”. The beverage is made up for ice tea, strawberry lemonade, and fresh strawberries and will be served in player dining, hospitality and select concession stands throughout the tournament. The other competing teams will be allowed the opportunity to sell their product from a pre-determined concession stand for one day of the LPGA Tournament.

Why: The “Fore Our Future Presented by Ally” business competition was geared towards fostering an entrepreneurial spirit within students through competitions held in four counties: Midland, Bay, Saginaw, and Isabella in the Great Lakes Bay Region. Teams competing within each county were identified through teachers, school administrators, club mentors, and group advisors. Competing teams presented a business plan to a panel of judges which comprised of individuals from the Dow Chemical Company, Octagon Inc., Northwood University, Wildfire Credit Union, Members First Credit Union, Midland Business and JANCM. The business plan was structured by the students to include capitalization, cash flow statement, product research and development, production process, pricing, marketing strategy and goals for profits generated through sales. Each competing team was advised by a mentor from their community to assist in the business plan preparation, presentation, and implementation. The competition was a part of the overall goal of the 2019 Dow GLBI to contribute towards innovation in the Great Lakes Bay Region.

Who: The “Fore our Future” business challenge was developed by JANCM in conjunction with the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, and presenting sponsor Ally Financial. Mike Rush, President, JA of North Central Michigan, David Ollila, President of Skypoint Ventures, Melissa DeBoer, Director of Admissions, Northwood University, John Gustincic, Director of Alden B.Dow Center for Creativity & Enterprise, Chris Chandler, executive director of the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational and Matt Hiliker from Octagon Inc. were on hand to announce the winners.
